Lore & Background
Master Shifu was once the devoted student of the tortoise Master Oogway, who mentored him. Shifu raised Tai Lung as an infant, making him his adopted son and student. Tai Lung was a prodigy, but when Oogway rejected him as the Dragon Warrior after sensing malice within him, Tai Lung became enraged and went on a rampage, leading to his imprisonment. Shifu felt responsible for this betrayal. Years later, when Oogway unexpectedly declares the bumbling panda Po as the Dragon Warrior, Shifu initially dismisses him. However, after Oogway ascends to the Spirit Realm and makes Shifu promise to believe in Po, Shifu discovers that Po can achieve physical feats when motivated by food. He trains Po in a unique kung fu style. When Tai Lung escapes from Chorh-Gom Prison and returns to the Valley, Shifu sends the Furious Five to stop him, but they are defeated. Shifu then faces Tai Lung alone and is brutally beaten. Po ultimately defeats Tai Lung using the Wuxi Finger Hold technique, which he taught himself.
In Their Own Story
The morning mist clings to the Jade Palace as Shifu announces a tournament to dub one of his five students—Tigress, Monkey, Crane, Viper, and Mantis—as the Dragon Warrior. When Po accidentally lands in front of them during the ceremony, Oogway unexpectedly declares him the Dragon Warrior. Shifu believes this is an accident and treats Po harshly, but after Oogway's departure to the Spirit Realm, Shifu promises to believe in Po. He discovers Po's food-driven motivation and trains him. When Tai Lung escapes prison, Shifu sends the Furious Five to intercept him, but they are defeated. Shifu then battles Tai Lung himself and is brutally defeated. Po arrives with the Dragon Scroll, which is blank, and after realizing its message—that belief makes things special—Po engages Tai Lung. Tai Lung nerve-strikes Po, but Po is unaffected due to his body fat. Po overpowers Tai Lung and vanquishes him with the Wuxi Finger Hold, which he taught himself.
